Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a disease caused by the mutation of Feline coronavirus (FCoV). In affected cats, FCoV usually causes mild, self-limiting diarrhoea and is quite a common virus within the general feline population. Some cats may be affected but show no clinical signs at all. It is important to understand that if a cat is diagnosed with FCoV this does not mean it will definitely go on to develop FIP.
FIP itself cannot be transmitted between cats, so if a cat has FIP it cannot pass FIP to another cat.

Currently, it is unknown what causes FCoV to mutate into FIP in certain cats, however research is continuously being carried out on this topic by specialists.

Up until recently, there was no known effective treatment for cats who had sadly developed FIP and the only option for vets and owners was to provide palliative care. In the past 18 months, there have been several papers published and exciting developments in using the antiviral medications Remdesivir and GS-441524 to treat FIP.
Donaldson’s Vets have successfully treated a number of cats suffering from FIP using this medication. Many of our patients have finished their course of treatment and are back to living their normal lives.
Our Somerset Road hospital is a local stockist working closely alongside BOVA, the manufacturer of Remdesivir and GS-441524, to ensure we have the medication readily available for our clients and patients. Local practices may also contact us to request this medication.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us on 01484 421512 and request a call back from one of our vets.
